Part 3: Developing Communication Tools

Instruction

Working as individuals or in groups, learners will develop their own communication tools to share information about Valley fever to residents of Yolo County. Their products may be written, visual (infographics, for example), or audio/video.

Learners should apply the One Health approach to developing their communication products when considering the following:

  1. Audience accessibility
  2. Risk factors
  3. Behaviors
  4. Human-Animal-Environmental connections

Examples of student-produced One Health communications videos may be found here: Example Student Videos

You may elect to have learners share their communications with the entire class and engage learners in the peer-review process.

Discussion or Writing

Lead a group discussion or assign written reflections based on the learners’ experiences with this lesson. Prompts include:

  1. Describe why disease outbreaks caused by fungal pathogens are likely to become more challenging to control under scenarios of abrupt climate change.
  2. Describe the main reason to adopt a One Health approach in understanding the risk factors for fungal diseases such as Valley fever. What are the possible limitations of the approach to disease prevention?
  3. Describe the main components of effective public health education and communication campaigns to curb the incidence and spread of fungal diseases in the One Health approach. What are some limiting factors encountered by public health agencies in implementing effective communication?
