Overview
This lesson introduces the learners to the concept of using a One Health approach to understanding, preventing, and responding to large-scale health events. We introduce the four broad categories of stakeholders that are included in a One Health approach and highlight the benefits and challenges of integrating human, animal, plant, and environmental factors in our consideration of health events.
To begin, learners are presented with a fictional scenario featuring a pathogenic fungus and asked to consider different approaches to understanding and responding to a disease event featuring this pathogen. The learners are then introduced to the One Health approach through video content and asked to reconsider their prior thinking through this lens.
Learners are then introduced to an actual pathogenic fungus (c.Auris) by reading and annotating a journal article (or via lecture with provided facilitator notes) and work to identify and graphically organize human, animal, plant, and environmental factors that may contribute to the risk of a global health event caused by c. Auris.
The lesson concludes with reflection questions for written response or discussion that encourage learners to think about the systematic changes to education or health care and research that would be needed to facilitate the application of a One Health approach to future global health events.
